What’s in a tattoo!
South Indian film star Oviya Helen in Colombo

Thousands of Sri Lankan fans of South Indian star Oviya Helen thronged Colombo streets to have a glimpse of the actress of Bigg Boss fame as she came to open a jewellery shop in Colombo Sea Street, the gold market of the country.

Oviya who stars in Tamil, Malayalam and other regional language films was surrounded by Sri Lankan police and security guards as she paced the red carpet stretching down a street, her hair peppered with multi-coloured confetti, and in full display of her famous Gypsy tattoo.

The massive crowd in a celebratory mood was proof of her immense popularity in the island. More than asking her for selfies most of her fans photographed her famous tattoo covering a greater part of her upper right hand.

Star of Hello Naan Pei Pesuren announced her Gysy tattoo on her Twitter page in 2016. “I can’t take eyes off my new gypsy tattoo…luving it more n more,” she said.

She is one of many South Indian stars who have embellished their bodies with beautiful designs albeit disastrous results for some. Tattoos are skin deep but they can tell people something about the personalities of the wearer and in the recent past the inked designs of showbiz personalities have garnered so much media and public attention.

A tattoo inked by Nayanthara, star of Manassinakkare and Iru Mugan, has been described as most controversial. She had her ex Prabhu Deva’s name tattooed on her arm and tried her best to hide it from the media after their break-up but it is no longer a secret now. She is said to have deleted it after the dancer, known as Michael Jackson of India for his rubbery histrionics on stage, broke up with her.

Trisha Krishnan’s famous cinema-themed tattoo to mark her fiftieth film

Trisha Krishnan (Mounam Pesiyadhe, Vinnaithaandi Varyvaaya) has three tattoos on her body. One on her chest, of the famous Disney character Nemo from the Hollywood blockbuster Finding Nemo. The other is her star sign Taurus inked on the back of her palm. After completing 50 films in Tamil and Telugu she celebrated the joy of being a part of the filmdom by inking a cinema-themed tattoo, which looks like a camera on tripod but also with a clap board. She got this done while vacationing in the US.

Kamal Hassan’s rebellious daughter, actor and singer Shruti Hassan (7aum Arivu, Race Gurram) has many tattoos.  She told the media that she has got fed up of them. She said, “I am done. I have five tattoos; on my wrist, behind my ear, on my foot, on my back and on my shoulder – my name in Tamil. I deeply regret these now, especially this one (pointing at the wrist) because I have to put so much make-up on it, to cover it.” True that’s additional work on film sets.

Taapsee Pannu, one of the most charming actresses and the star of Pink and Arrambam, has a tattoo of a dancing girl on her leg. Taapsee’s sex abuse drama Pink’s temporary tattoo of a row of four birds on her collar bone sparked a rage with many girls queueing up at tattoo salons to ink the same. She has also a tattoo on her back which is not visible. It is her name, which is in ambigram script and people can only understand if read from the reverse direction.

Kushboo Sundar (Chinna Thambi, Cowboy) has more than one tattoo. She has a huge peacock on her back and a heart with wings tattooed on her hand. On her hand is the names of her daughters Avantika and Anantika in Tamil and English, certainly a better choice than Nayanthara’s. On her right arm near the elbow another one is rumoured to be the name of husband, actor/director Sunder C. She is now said to be shy of showing her peacock tattoo after becoming an important politician. She is currently the national spokesperson for Indian National Congress.

Simran Bagga (Vaaranam Aayiram, Indraprastham)  has a visible tattoo on her upper left breast of a blue flower design with small vines surrounding it.

Priyamani (Alice: a True Story, Raavanan) inked the phrase ‘Daddy’s girl’ tattooed on her forearm. She got that inked when she was on a holiday in Thailand. Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra has a similar tattoo, Daddy’s lil girl, which inspired Priyamani according to the southern star.

Tattoos don’t still seem to be a popular fashion statement among the Sri Lankan actresses except for a few wannabe starlets and models! – newstrails.com
