New Sri Lankan Mrs. World works in Dubai

Caroline Jurie was crowned as Mrs. World in US on Dec. 7

Sri Lankan beauty queen Caroline Jurie who was crowned Mrs. World 2020 in Las Vegas arrived in Sri Lanka to a rousing welcome on December 10.

Caroline, born in 1992, works in Dubai and lives there with her husband Nishantha Deepal and her two-year-old daughter. Her mother flew into the UAE to look after the two-year-old while Caroline was busy getting ready for the beauty pageant.

Speaking to Aruna Sinhala website in Colombo, Caroline’s husband says his wife studied at Kandana Girls School. “My sister had been studying with her but I never knew her in Sri Lanka. I met her in Dubai where she is working and married her.”

Caroline had never taken part in a beauty pageant earlier and she decided to compete in Sri Lankan Mrs. World contest on a whim. “She is woman with lot of dedication and perseverance. She is a courageous woman who can face any challenge and she came to Sri Lanka for preparatory arrangements. Since she had no experience in beauty pageant she had to work really hard and learn everything from scratch”

Caroline is from Wattala, Mahabage. She has four siblings. Many people attended a massive reception arranged by the natives of her small town while Caroline was on her way to Colombo after arriving at the Kutanayake International Airport.

Caroline competed with 51 other beautiful women to emerge as the winner and she was crowned by last year’s champ Jennifer Le who was born in Vietnam and raised in Seattle. She is the first Vietnamese woman to be crowned as the most beautiful married woman of the world.

Since its inception in 1984 Sri Lanka has produced two winners. Rosy Senanayake won the crown in 1985 at the finals in Queensland, Australia, and now Caroline is the reigning champ, after 35 years. No country has won the crown twice.

Senanayake is engaged in politics. She has served as an ambassador and now functions as the Colombo Mayor.

Nisahantha describes his wife as a hardworking and loving mother. “We don’t have a housemaid and she wakes up early morning to cook and feed the baby before she leaves home for work. She is also an excellent cook.”

Contenders from Ireland and US Virgin Islands have been crowned the 1st and 2nd runners-up of the competition.

A joke going around social media says, “Whatever it is, Sri Lankan men are looking after their wives well! We have won the crown, not once, but twice.” – Somasiri Munasinghe
